A back carry is totally doable with a tiny baby. It helps if you start
off with a mom who's already done back carries with a wrap, or with a
helper who has done it successfully.
The Tibetans often swaddle tiny babies and this makes it somewhat easier to wrap them on.
The Mayans wear their tiny ones on the back, in a one-shoulder carry, with the baby's body diagonal across mother's back -- it looks like a pod full of peas.
In central Africa, you will see tiny babies (2 weeks old) in torso carries, with both arms tucked in.
I did all of these carries with tiny Toni, from the day Dan went back to work after the birth.
