Common Concerns by Joanna Sutcliffe |
 |
|
Baby will become "spoiled" and dependent.
A baby who feels secure and certain that his needs will be more independent.
Anecdotal evidence shows that sling babies grow independent very quickly. They
will ask to be put down where other, more insecure children are ask to be
picked up.
|
Baby is "scrunched up".
That can't be comfortable If you were “scrunched up” like that, you would be
uncomfortable. But you aren't shaped like a baby. Your baby has spent nine
months “scrunched up” and finds this position comforting. Besides, babies tend
not to be too shy about letting their parents know when they're uncomfortable.
|
I tried a sling and it didn't work.
Every new thing takes time to learn. Remember how you struggled to get that
#!@$ car seat installed? Baby carriers are no exception. They take a little
time to learn how to use. You may have to work at it for a couple of days.
Don't give up! It's worth the small investment of extra time. Check out the
instructions on this site for help. Find a friend to help you. Go through the
comfort guidelines for your type of carrier. Try a different type of carrier.
|
It doesn't look safe!
Many cultures around the world have used babywearing in one form or another for
thousands of years. You can use a simple piece of cloth or a more sophisticated
carrier. However, the most important tool to use is common sense. Your child is
not "strapped in". You are responsible for his safety. Only practice
babywearing with a co-operative child!

Geneva Likes It! |
 |
|
The first time I tried this carry Geneva started laughing. I'm not sure if she liked it, or if she just thought her mama was crazy.

You are a Master Babywearer |
 |
|
In China, it is said that "A master is anyone who knows more than you do." So, you are all master babywearers compared with most of the moms in the world. You do NOT need to know everything there is to know about babywearing -- if you know even ONE carry with even ONE type of carrier, you are in possession of knowledge other moms desperately want -- even if they do not yet know they want it. ;-D Therefore, you should all feel confident enough to teach others! So, pick a public place, pick a day of the week, and start sharing your skills with other families! Then, list yourself here.
